Acupuncture has often been referred to as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM.  It has been practiced around the world for thousands of years.  In recent years, acupuncture has become more and more popular in traditional medical settings.  It has been widely used for many years for chronic pain, including headaches, spinal pain and referred or extremity pain (pain in the arms or legs).

More recently, acupuncture has become more commonplace in acute care settings and sports medicine clinics as a way of managing acute inflammation and acute muscle pain.  This technique is sometimes referred to as "dry needling" and it is used quite extensively in physical rehabilitation settings, including with the US Military.
