Slips and falls can happen, especially in winter weather. However, there are things you can do to reduce your slip and fall risk. Check out these helpful tips to avoid a fall this winter.

1. Take it Slow

Snow, ice, and rain can cause slippery conditions due to less traction. With this in mind, remember to go slow and take your time! Walk deliberately, take small steps, stay flat-footed, and remain relaxed. Additionally, try to stay balanced when you walk – use the imaginary line that runs from your ear through the shoulder, hip, and ankle. If the line is straight, you’ll be more balanced.

2. Go Hands-Free

When possible, keep your hands free from objects and out of your pockets. Carrying objects can be distracting, obstruct your vision, leave you unbalanced – and ultimately more prone to a fall. When you must carry objects, plan accordingly – ask for help, take multiple trips rather than overloading yourself, and use a bag with handles.

3. Choose the Right Footwear

Always consider the weather (and how quickly it can change here in Minnesota) when choosing your footwear. Pick shoes or boots with non-slip, thick tread that will provide better traction. The more walking surface you have below your feet, the more area of traction you will have. If you must walk in ice or snow, feel free to use over-the-shoe traction devices or ice grippers – just be sure to remove them before going indoors!

4. Stay Alert

Avoid shortcuts and use designated parking lots, crosswalks, and sidewalks. Keep your eyes focused on where you are going and avoid distractions. Stay alert and anticipate slippery conditions.

5. Check Before you Step

Test the ground before taking a full step. By testing the ground first, you can check for slippery spots. Always do this when exiting a building or vehicle, and when making transitions from one surface to another (ex. sidewalk to parking lot). If you notice any potential risks, be sure to report the risk to the appropriate individuals.
